Collagen Supplements in China: Market, Formats, and Platform Strategy in 2026

Collagen is one of the fastest-growing supplement categories in China. The market grew from RMB 3 billion in 2020 to over RMB 20 billion in 2025. Chinese consumers are buying collagen for skin elasticity, joint health, and anti-aging. Unlike Western markets where collagen is still a functional fitness product, in China it is firmly positioned as a beauty supplement, driven by decades of traditional medicine emphasis on skin health from within.

The Chinese Collagen Consumer

The primary buyer is a woman aged 25 to 45, based in a tier-1 or tier-2 city, who already uses multiple skincare products and sees collagen supplements as the next layer of her beauty routine. She follows beauty content on Douyin and Xiaohongshu, where skincare educators regularly discuss the science of collagen degradation after age 25. She is willing to pay a premium for a foreign brand if the formulation is credible.

Product Formats That Sell in China

Drinkable collagen (liquid sachets and ready-to-drink formats) dominates the category in China. Japanese brands like DHC and Meiji Amino Collagen set the format expectation years ago. Powder formats in individual sticks are the second most popular. Capsules perform significantly below average in this category because Chinese consumers associate liquid collagen with faster absorption, a belief reinforced by KOC content on Xiaohongshu.

Collagen combined with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or ceramide performs better than collagen alone. Bundled beauty formulations have become the standard on Tmall Global. For context on how CBEC works for supplement brands, see our Cross-Border Ecommerce guide and the full China Health Supplement Market report.

Platform Strategy for Collagen Brands

Xiaohongshu is the primary discovery channel for collagen. Beauty supplement content that shows before-and-after skin photos, explains peptide molecular weight (lower molecular weight = better absorption, a detail Chinese consumers actively search for), and features real user testimonials performs well. We run Xiaohongshu seeding campaigns for collagen clients using 30 to 50 micro-KOCs (10,000 to 80,000 followers) before Tmall store launch.

Douyin converts well for collagen through livestream sales. A credible beauty educator explaining the product and offering a limited-time bundle price drives immediate purchases. Douyin collagen livestreams from top KOLs regularly generate RMB 1 million in sales in a single session.

What We See With Collagen Brands

We have worked with European and Australian collagen brands launching on Tmall Global. The most common mistake: launching a capsule format because it is cheaper to produce, then wondering why conversion is low. Format is not negotiable in this category. The second most common mistake: a generic product page with no molecular weight information. Chinese collagen consumers ask one question above all: “几道水解?多少分子量?” (How many times hydrolysed? What is the molecular weight?). Answer this prominently on the product page.

Regulation: Can You Sell Collagen via CBEC?

Yes. Marine and bovine collagen supplements sold as food supplements enter China via CBEC without Blue Hat registration. Labelling must comply with CBEC food labelling requirements. Fish collagen from wild-caught sources requires traceability documentation. If your collagen product makes drug-level claims (treating joint disease, for example), it will be reclassified and require different regulatory approval.

FAQ: Collagen Questions from Chinese Consumers

鱼胶原蛋白和猪胶原蛋白哪个好?(Fish collagen vs pig collagen: which is better?) Marine (fish) collagen is preferred by the majority of Chinese consumers. It is perceived as cleaner and is more compatible with dietary restrictions. Fish collagen type I is the closest match to human skin collagen. This preference is reflected in Tmall search volume: “鱼胶原蛋白” outperforms “猪胶原蛋白” 5 to 1.

胶原蛋白分子量多少最好?(What is the best molecular weight for collagen?) Below 3,000 Daltons is the threshold Chinese consumers trust for absorption. Below 1,000 Daltons (oligopeptides) is the premium tier. Products displaying their molecular weight on packaging and product pages convert higher than those that do not disclose this information.

喝多久才见效?(How long before you see results?) Chinese consumers expect to see skin improvements in 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use. Products that provide a 30-day or 60-day supply with a clear usage schedule and a “first effects timeline” in the product description reduce returns and increase repeat purchase rates.
