China has a sleep problem. An estimated 300 million Chinese adults report sleep difficulties, according to a 2025 China Sleep Research Society report. Work pressure, screen time, and urban noise are the three most cited causes. The sleep supplement market grew from RMB 2 billion in 2021 to RMB 9 billion in 2025. Melatonin, magnesium, L-theanine, and ashwagandha are the top-selling ingredients. If you make sleep supplements, you are entering one of the fastest-growing health categories in China.
The Chinese Sleep Consumer
The primary sleep supplement buyer in China is urban, aged 25 to 40, working in a high-pressure environment (tech, finance, consulting), and already familiar with Western wellness trends. She has tried herbal teas and aromatherapy and is now looking at targeted supplementation. She shops on Tmall Global for foreign brands and validates choices on Xiaohongshu before purchasing.
The secondary segment is parents buying melatonin for children with irregular sleep schedules. This segment is controversial in China (there is ongoing debate about melatonin use in children), so messaging for this sub-segment requires care.
Top Ingredients in China’s Sleep Category
Melatonin is the category leader. It is legally sold as a supplement via CBEC. Brands with 0.5mg to 3mg dosing perform better in China than high-dose (10mg) products, which Chinese consumers associate with dependency risk. Magnesium glycinate is the fastest-growing ingredient, driven by “压力管理” (stress management) content on Xiaohongshu. L-theanine (from green tea) is perceived as natural and culturally familiar, making it easy to position in China. Ashwagandha is a rising ingredient being introduced through “adaptogen” content from Western wellness KOLs translated for Chinese audiences.
Platform Strategy for Sleep Supplements
Sleep supplements convert well on Tmall Global when product pages are built around the consumer’s bedtime routine: what to take, when to take it, and what to expect in the first week. “Sleep hygiene” content on Xiaohongshu (blue light blocking, sleep tracking, supplement stacking) performs very well. Brands that become part of this content ecosystem build organic search traffic and trust before investing in paid advertising.
Douyin is an emerging channel for sleep supplements, particularly through “morning routine” and “end-of-day routine” content formats. For how to structure the China market entry, see our Cross-Border Ecommerce guide and the China Health Supplement Market report.
What We See With Sleep Supplement Brands
We have worked with melatonin and magnesium brands from the US, UK, and Australia entering Tmall Global. The first challenge is always dosing: Chinese regulatory guidance for melatonin as a food product caps claims at 3mg per serving. Brands bringing 10mg products need to adjust their Chinese-market messaging and consider offering a China-specific SKU.
The second challenge is competition from Chinese traditional medicine alternatives (枣仁安神胶囊, 酸枣仁 products). Western sleep supplements need to position on speed and precision: “clinical dosing,” “science-backed,” “used by athletes and professionals.” This positioning works well with the urban professional buyer who has already tried traditional options.
Regulatory Notes for Sleep Supplements
Melatonin can be sold as a food supplement via CBEC in China. Claims must be limited to sleep support, not treatment of insomnia (a medical claim). Products making strong sedative claims will face inspection. Magnesium, L-theanine, and ashwagandha are generally classified as food ingredients and can enter via CBEC without Blue Hat registration.
FAQ: Sleep Supplement Questions from Chinese Consumers
褪黑素会让人上瘾吗?(Is melatonin addictive?) No. Melatonin is not habit-forming. However, Chinese consumers ask this frequently, and it should be addressed proactively on the product page and in KOC content. The answer: melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body; supplementing does not suppress natural production at low doses.
镁有助于睡眠吗?(Does magnesium help with sleep?) Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and the regulation of melatonin production. Magnesium glycinate is the most bioavailable form and the least likely to cause digestive upset. Chinese consumers on Xiaohongshu actively compare magnesium forms, so specifying “甘氨酸镁” (magnesium glycinate) on the product page matters.
什么时候吃助眠补剂最好?(When is the best time to take sleep supplements?) Melatonin: 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Magnesium glycinate: 1 hour before bed or with dinner. L-theanine: can be taken throughout the day for calm focus, or before bed for sleep preparation. Include this dosing information clearly in Chinese on the product page and in your Xiaohongshu content.
